By Ken Croker, Business ManagerThe black and white tiles are gone from the floor of my business, save for a small corner of the establishment invisible to the eye of the customer. It has been replaced by a rough looking, dingy, diamond-plate sort of gray tile. And though this has changed the view in my store, it hasn't changed my view of the world in general. Far right, no excuses, no apologies. In spite of all this, I recently felt a disturbance in the force. It was a minor one, but it was a disturbance nonetheless.
Anyone who knows me through my business knows that I wear two sleeves on my shirt...politics and religion. I have a certificate on my wall over my desk that states that I am a charter member of the vast right wing conspiracy. On the back of my register screen I have a scripture from Isaiah 53. No bones. There it is. There I stand. I don't believe I shall be moving any time soon.
Anyone else who has frequented my establishment since the beginning of the "Great Experiment II," (you know, the one where we elect someone who has no experience, no track record, no past, and absolutely no clue and hope he causes the lame to walk, blind to see, deaf to hear, and mortgage to be paid) knows of the Wall Of Shame, a.k.a. political humor central. There it is (or was) for all to see and comment on freely, be they for or against my opinion. It sparked laughter. It sparked conversation. It sparked debate. It sparked a desire for some to come in to the store in anticipation of what might be on the wall next.
The previously mentioned disturbance in the force recently came in the form of a left wing extremist with an axe to grind. Said person walked into my establishment and claimed that she heard that we had a bunch of 'fascist propaganda' on the wall, and that now that she was here to see it, she knows her friend wasn't lying and wanted the corporate phone number. She was informed that she could talk to the manager (me) and that I was "...right over there." The odd thing that the leftist said next is a puzzlement to me. She said "I've already talked to him about this and he's very rude." ???
Now I am not whining about not getting my way. I am whining, however, about the fact that they said my having this opinion was offensive to them. Yet if I were to go into a few of the establishments in the area and complain about the Obama stickers or the FREE TIBET (when you purchase one Tibet of equal or greater value) signs, I would probably be chased out of the establishment by a small mob, being hogtied with hemp ropes and beaten with wicker brooms in a cloud of dust and patchouli and a flurry of tie-dye until I submitted to the moon goddess with an offering of eye of newt and rum.
It's about freedom of speech.
With that said, I revert back to the statement made about my "fascist propaganda." I decided I really needed to look up the word 'fascist' and see if it was defined in the way it was being propagated by so many. Here is what I came up with. Merriam-Webster defines 'fascist' as follows…
Main Entry: fas·cism
Pronunciation: \ˈfa-ˌshi-zəm also ˈfa-ˌsi-\
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle & fasces fasces
Date: 1921
1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control <early instances of army fascism and brutality — J. W. Aldridge>When I read this, I did not see myself or the American version of the right wing at all in the picture. This is the way I have always seen fascism. I am in agreement with this definition and always hope to stand against such a regime that promotes such ideals.
Searching a little further, I found a rather extended definition of the word on Wikipedia. I will only print excerpts, and encourage anyone to look up this definition yourself at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism. If you, dear reader, are not familiar with the phenomenon that is Wikipedia, I will sum it up for you. It is an ever-changing online encyclopedia whose definitions are constantly added to and changed by the readers. Every definition is to be fact checked as such and flagged if the writings are in question. But recently, there has been some controversy regarding the slant of definitions allowed on the site as well as questionable writings going unchecked. So, with that in mind, some of the definitions regarding fascism on Wikipedia are as follows...
"Fascism was originally founded by Italian national syndicalists in World War I who combined left-wing and right-wing political views, but gravitated to the political right in the early 1920s. Scholars generally consider fascism to be on the far right of the conventional left-right political spectrum."
“They oppose liberalism — as a bourgeois movement — and Marxism — as a proletarian movement — for being exclusive economic class-based movements. Fascists present their ideology as that of an economically trans-class movement that promotes ending economic class conflict to secure national solidarity. They believe that economic classes are not capable of properly governing a nation, and that a merit-based aristocracy of experienced military persons must rule through regimenting a nation's forces of production and securing the nation's independence. Fascism perceives conservatism as partly valuable for its support of order in society but opposes its typical opposition to change and modernization. Fascism presents itself as a solution to the perceived benefits and disadvantages of conservatism by advocating state-controlled modernization that promotes orderly change while resisting the dangers of pluralism and independent initiative to order in society.”
Something that has bothered me since I became politically and ideologically aware is the fact that anytime I hear talk of the likes of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, etc... I hear them put into the right wing dog pile. The phrase used in earnest regarding these historical figures is 'right wing extremists'. Now I hear my person and those I try to surround myself with called the very same thing. So, as you can imagine, I take great issue with this terminology.
I will now address those who think I am a fascist or think I should be lumped in with some of the greatest enemies of humanity. The Baathist party (who Saddam Hussein claimed as his party) was conceived in Paris by two French/Syrian scholars in the 1930s. The long-winded name was the Baath Arab Socialist Party. This tyrannical and genocidal movement was frocked with fascist ideologies to the point of Nazism. Hitler persecuted Jews, gypsies, gays, Poles, Russians, Czechs, and the mentally or physically handicapped as well as the elderly. Mussolini, in his ascent to power, took over factories, the press, railroads, and communications in Italy. He later banned free elections and routed out anyone who took issue with his power.
This reminds me of another fascist leader who took his plays right out of the Mussolini handbook, "Fascism for Dummies." Hugo Chavez has been taking over all broadcast outlets, the newspapers, the power stations, and just made a grab at his nation’s steel manufacturers and producers. He just started a Twitter site for people to snitch out other citizens who disagree with him. Sounds like the rat email address our fearless leader opened up to turn in those who dissented against the Socialized Health Care Bill for purposes of 're-educating'.
I am a right-winger. I am also a Christian. My political views and faith allow me to believe that you have the right to express your opinion regardless of whether or not I am offended. This is in diametric opposition to the ideals of Fascism.
On the flip side of that, I also have the right in this great country, under the watchful eye of the Creator, to express my opinion as well. I also have the right to share my beliefs. I have a right to vote my conscience and opinion. I have a right to be happy or unhappy with the leaders of my city, county, state, and federal governments. But it seems that in this country of rights and freedoms, these rights and freedoms are only observed and reserved for those who disagree with me or the folks who share my ideals. And in the end, WE are the ones who are told we are offending people.
That is Fascism. I am offended.
For the record, upon reading the above definitions, I tend to see these very qualities that I am being accused of foisting upon the masses embodied in our current administration. We are having our societal classes stripped off like breakaways on the sidelines at an NBA game. Our thoughts are held borderline suspect according to the terrorist lexicon put out by the Department of Homeland Security. Our ability to achieve is being deemed unfair to those who would rather not work as hard, and therefore, we are being taxed extra heavy for achieving our life goals. As has been said, a government cannot give something that it has not first taken away. In the eyes of our government, as in all fascist regimes before and elsewhere, the playing field for the commoners is being leveled, except that the head of the table is being reserved for the governing body, with the choicest foods being served to themselves. The only thing left is to have vocal dissenters persecuted, prosecuted, or executed. Then the seed of Fascism will have been watered, fertilized, and brought to fruition.
I have a right to my opinion, as do you. So far, we have neither given up that right, nor had it taken from us by force. I have my right to express my opinion in the form I choose, and I choose humor and satire mounted on my wall for all to chuckle at. If some don't find it funny, don't laugh. If some do, laugh. If some are offended, well, grow some skin. Lord knows I have to in order to withstand the slant of opinion in this world. This land is still free, and until it is no longer, those of us on the right should exercise the same liberties that the left abuses so frequently. And we should do so without having to hide our beliefs in a world that flaunts its opposition so boldly.
